PRAYING for CAMEROON

23rd November 2008

A population of 18.5 million people. This country is north of Gabon and between Nigeria, Chad, Rep of the Congo and the other countries for prayer this week. Over half a million people have AIDS.  Cameroon has generally enjoyed stability, which has permitted the development of agriculture, roads, and railways as well as a petroleum industry. Whilst French and English are the official languages, there are 279 languages spoken in the country. Over 60% have an association with the Church and about 25% are Muslim. The spiritual poverty of the churches is the country’s greatest tragedy. Nominal Christianity is a bigger problem in this land than in any other in Africa.

Some claim Cameroon is the most corrupt nation on earth. Massive corruption in the government, administration, police, the legal system and business have debased living standards, crippled economic growth and brought despair and hopelessness to the great majority of the population.  However, many significant leaders in the army, police and politics have been converted — giving hope for a changing society. Soccer is huge in this country,  Cameroon has qualified for the FIFA World Cup five times which is more than any other African nation.
