Pray for Côte d'Ivoire

Over 20 million people live in Cote d’Ivoire which is on the West African coast between Ghana and Liberia. About 65 people per sq km. Rain forest in the south and highlands in the north. Over 500 km of coastline which has heavy surf and no natural harbors and during the rainy season torrential flooding is possible. One of the world's largest producers of cocoa, coffee and palm oil. Post-independence boom produced both massive immigration of job seekers from surrounding lands and a high level of corruption.

Independent from France in 1960. Formerly a one-party presidential government under Houphouet-Boigny, who died in 1993. His elected successor was deposed and fled the country during a coup at Christmas 1999. The military-led transitional government oversaw a new constitution and elections in 2000. Several thousand French and UN troops remain in Cote d'Ivoire to help the parties implement their commitments and to support the peace process.

Complete religious freedom. Muslim 38.6%, Christian 32.8%, Indigenous 11.9%. The government remains sympathetic to missions. Traditional religions are generally stronger in the centre and west. Both Islam and Christianity are highly syncretized with African traditional beliefs, making these three religions impossible to precisely detail.
