The Solomon Islands has a history of revivals – in the South Sea Evangelical Churches in 1935 and 1970, then in nearly all denominations after 1982. In the 1980s and 1990s, new charismatic networks and churches emerged in another wave of spiritual life. Evangelical and charismatic believers grew in number across almost all denominations. The civil war of 1998-2003 paralysed the nation on a number of levels and left many thousands uprooted and in need of practical help and spiritual counselling. Though outside intervention imposed peace and disarmed the ethnic militias, a deeper malaise in the nation remains. Pray for true forgiveness and reconciliation that come only through repentance. Without these, the nation can never really progress. Over recent decades the Solomon Islands has developed a close relationship with Australia as it endeavours to overcome its many development challenges. The people speak more than 70 languages. Communication, transport, and delivery of health and education services is difficult because of the highly dispersed population living on about 20 main islands of the nearly 1,000 islands for the whole country.
