The highest point is Qullai Ismoili Somoni, 7,495 meters above sea level. Only 6% of the land is arable. While Tajikistan has experienced steady economic growth since 1997, more than half of the population continues to live in poverty. Terrorist attacks have occurred in Tajikistan. Since September 2010, there has been an upsurge in security incidents including explosions in various locations in Tajikistan, including the capital, Dushanbe. The birth of a Tajik Church, although a slow and painstaking process, is now reality. The Church among Tajiks is small, only a thousand, but growing. The civil war left an indelible mark on the nation, which is still recovering more than 10 years later. Hardship is widespread, with 83% of the population under the poverty line. The most vulnerable segments of society particularly at risk are prisoners, elderly, widows and orphans.
