Twelve larger and 70 smaller islands, southeast of the Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific. Formerly New Hebrides. Late in the nineteenth century the New Hebrides and other islands supplied labourers for the sugar and cotton plantations in Australia (known in Australia as the “Kanakas”). John Thompson saw the need and opportunity to evangelize among these displaced people and on January 1, 1893 opened a mission near Childers, Queensland. In the first ten years over 160 islanders were baptized and many on their return home built chapels and schools and began to evangelize. When the first long-term missionary, Frank Filmer, Iris Hull's father, arrived from Australia in 1908 there were young Church communities already established. The Ranwadi High School began in 1902. Frank Filmer was involved from 1908 until 1912 at this School. This is a successful School which is still operating over 100 years later.   Recent work by Presbyterians, the JESUS film and WBT sees a new wave of over 7,000 positive responses to the good news. Vanuatu’s motto is “In God We Stand”. Pray that leaders of this complex little nation may be examples in doing so. Committed Christians played a major role in attaining independence, and they continue to help lead the country - not least is the President himself. http://www.inpartnership.org.au/countries/vanuatu
