Over the next 3 weeks we will be speaking about the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We begin this by considering the work of the Holy Spirit in Creation.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2, NKJV.
The first thing to remember is that the Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity. You cannot speak about a time when the Holy Spirit began His work because He has always been. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are the one God. It is beyond our minds to understand this but John explains the following which is helpful.
“This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.” 1 John 5:6-8, NKJV.
The work of the Holy Spirit reminds me of who gets the credit for a good movie. A movie begins or ends with mention of the main characters of the epic film, the actors who are the main stars, but then it goes on to mention a whole army of people who were responsible for the film and then eventually mention of the Director and the Producer. Yet without all of the people working hard behind the screen it is not going to be worth watching. In a way the Holy Spirit is working hard behind the scenes in Creation. He gets minimum credit yet He is vital. The whole God-Head is extremely important in all things. The creative and supportive role of the Holy Spirit is pivotal in creation, in history and even in our daily lives.
