Luke 19:1-10
Zacchaeus heard that Jesus Christ
Was passing through the town.
He climbed a tree, so he could see
That Man of great renown.
The Saviour saw that man and said,
“Zacchaeus, quickly, come
Right down, because I want to dine
Tonight with you at home.”
The crowd complained, “I can’t believe
He’s gone to dine with him!
A dirty traitor to the Jews,
He’s steeped so deep in sin!”
“I know that I’ve been terrible,”
Zacchaeus said, “so I
Give half my goods out to the poor.”
Then he began to cry.
“As tax collector, I’ve grown rich;
As chief I have much gold.
So, to those whom I’ve defrauded, I’ll
Return the lot fourfold.
The Lord replied, “salvation’s come
To this house and to this man.
For even he – Zacchaeus – is
A son of Abraham.”
He was aware that he would have
To pay a massive cost:
The Son of Man, named Jesus, came
To seek and save the lost.
Zacchaeus knew his sin was great;
God’s grace was greater still.
And Jesus paid for your sins, too,
When he died upon a hill.
