Brick laying begins with a solid foundation. Apart from Joel, not many of us have had any experience in building a house, yet we all live in one. We are thankful for the security and protection that our home provides us, but rarely do we think about the structure and even less do we reflect on the quality of the foundation. In reality the foundation is often hidden underground but if it failed we would be in trouble. Our home would no longer be a place of safety and it would be unstable and very  dangerous.

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
1 Peter 2:4-6, ESV.

It is vitally important that the foundation we lay for our lives is one that has a faith in and a reliance on Jesus at its core. The amazing truth about following Jesus is that He is the one who has laid the foundation. We are frail and human and without Jesus our lives are lost.

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” 1 Peter 2:9-10.

We are secure because of who Jesus is and what He has given us and what He has prepared for us for eternity. Trust Him in and through every circumstance.
