It’s important to understand the historical context of Colossians, as this goes on to further illustrate Paul’s intentions and his teaching. In Colossae, false teachers advocated for a “higher spirituality” that added requirements that were beyond the saving grace of Jesus. Paul writes that true spirituality relies solely on a personal relationship with Jesus, in fact salvation hinges solely on Christ.
Paul continues by declaring that “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” reside in Christ. This doesn’t mean these treasures are reserved for a select few; rather, every believer has access to wisdom and knowledge essential for living a holy life in Jesus. Paul draws on Old Testament wisdom traditions, equating knowledge with the intellectual content of faith and wisdom with the ability to perceive reality as God does, enabling godly living.
In Colossians 2:3, we’re reminded that everything necessary to understand the Father and live in a way that glorifies Him is accessible to all believers through His Son Jesus. However, this wisdom and knowledge in Christ may seem hidden to the world, as fallen humanity often perceives the wisdom of Jesus and His cross as foolishness.
Without divine grace, people lack the moral capacity to grasp the truth and sufficiency of the gospel. Only through the opening of the Spirit’s eyes (as it’s His work), can sinners comprehend the depth of the cross and its significance in atoning for sin. At this moment we have a choice, and this is where Godly wisdom and discernment is so vital.
Are you willing to be handed over into the hands of God, through an act of obedience and divine wisdom?
