Last time I spoke, we began to look at Jesus’ announcing that “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35). Here, He invites His listeners to a relationship with Him that satisfies the deepest human needs. His statements go beyond the immediate hunger of the crowd and addresses their spiritual hunger that only He can fulfill. This claim is not about temporary fulfillment; it is about a complete and eternal satisfaction found in Christ.

The conversation takes a challenging turn as Jesus declares that “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” I can understand why this metaphor shocked His audience. What did He mean by eating His flesh and drinking His blood? Jesus was not speaking literally but symbolically, referring to the necessity of accepting His sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. He was pointing ahead to His crucifixion and how this act of faith leads to eternal life.

This passage also emphasizes the intimate relationship between belief in Christ and receiving eternal life. Jesus draws a clear connection between believing in Him and having life. He stresses that just as bread is necessary for physical survival, so is faith in Him necessary for spiritual survival and eternal life.

Jesus’ teaching challenges us to examine where we seek satisfaction. Are we seeking temporary fulfillment in the things of this world, or are we finding our ultimate satisfaction in the Bread of Life being Jesus Himself? Only He can truly satisfy our deepest spiritual hunger which poses the question, what are you filling yourself with?
