This weekend, with Geoff Payne, we are looking at Luke 10:25-37 “the parable of the Good Samaritan.” Raising the question, “Who is my neighbour?” I’m sure that Jesus’ answer challenges us to look beyond social, cultural, and personal boundaries to truly love and serve those around us.
This parable describes a man attacked by robbers and left wounded on the side of the road. A priest and a Levite, both religious figures see him but choose to pass by. However, a Samaritan, a man from a group despised by the Jews, stops to help. He tends to the wounded man’s needs, takes him to safety, and provides for his recovery.
Jesus concludes the story by asking, “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The lawyer responds, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus then commands, “Go and do likewise.”
This parable is more than just a story, it’s a call to action. It challenges us to examine how we love and care for others. True compassion is not about convenience, status or receiving justice from those who offend you; it is about seeing people through God’s eyes and responding with love.
Each day God gives us opportunities to be that Good Samaritan. It may be a struggling colleague, a family member in distress, or a stranger in need. Do we walk past, caught up in our own concerns and wants, failing to stop and extend a hand?
So, let’s ask ourselves:
- Who is my neighbour today?
- How can I show love in action rather than just words?
- Am I willing to step outside my comfort zone, my wants and needs to help others?
Jesus calls us to “go and do likewise,” calling us to show kindness, mercy, and generosity to all.
