Walking with Jesus: What does this mean?

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:6–7).

Paul gives us a simple yet profound picture of discipleship: Walking with Jesus. This isn’t just a Sunday activity or a spiritual slogan, it is a way of life. To “walk with Jesus” means that our daily steps, choices, and attitudes are shaped by His presence and Lordship.

To walk with Jesus, means being rooted in Him. Just as a tree gains nourishment and stability from its roots, we draw our life and strength from Jesus. Without Him, we wither. With Him, we stand firm when trials and doubts come.

It also means being built up in Him. Walking with Jesus is not standing still, it speaks of growth. Our faith should deepen, our character should mature, and our love for others should widen. This growth happens as we stay connected to His Word, prayer, and fellowship with His people.

Walking with Jesus also means being strengthened in the faith. The world is full of competing voices and empty promises. Paul reminds us that in Christ “all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness” (v. 9–10). We don’t need to look elsewhere for meaning, identity, or salvation. Everything we need is found in Him.

Finally, walking with Jesus results in thankfulness. A heart anchored in Christ cannot help but overflow with gratitude for His grace, His guidance, and His presence in every step of the journey.

So, what does it mean to walk with Jesus? It means letting Him be the source of your strength, the guide for your growth, and the fullness of your life. It’s a daily journey of faith, rooted in Christ, strengthened by His Spirit, and overflowing with gratitude.

This week, may we take time to ask ourselves: Am I walking with Jesus? And if so, are my steps showing His life in me?
