At the very end of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus gathers His disciples together and gives them what we now call the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” These words were not just instructions for the first disciples, they are the ongoing mission of the Church today.
For us at Hampstead Gardens Church of Christ, this passage shapes the heart of who we are seeking to be and what we seek to do. Our mission is not simply to gather for worship each week, but to be a community that helps people come to know Jesus and follow Him. Discipleship begins with introducing others to Christ, as we walk together in faith, while learning His ways and encouraging one another to practice living by them.
The command to “go” reminds us that the gospel was never meant to stay within the walls of a church building or meeting place. It calls us to be intentional in our everyday lives, within our families, neighbourhoods, workplaces, and community as mentioned in last week’s message. Each conversation, act of kindness, and word of encouragement can become an opportunity to reflect the love of Christ and point others toward Him.
Jesus also calls His followers to baptise and teach. Baptism is a public declaration of a new life in Christ, while teaching helps believers grow deeper in their faith and obedience. As a church, this means creating spaces where people can learn, ask questions, build relationships, and mature spiritually together as it’s more than Sunday attendance.
Yet the Great Commission does not leave us to do this work alone. Jesus finishes with a powerful promise: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” He also said that “I will send a Helper.” Our mission is sustained by His presence and we go in His authority, serve in His strength, and trust Him to work in the hearts of people.
As Hampstead Gardens Church of Christ continues to look toward the future, may we embrace this calling with renewed faith and purpose, welcoming, teaching, and walking alongside others as we all grow to become faithful disciples of Jesus.
