One of the greatest questions people ask in times of grief is, “What happens to those who have died?” For believers, God’s Word provides a comforting answer to encourage Christians who were grieving the loss of fellow believers.
Paul begins by saying, “We do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.” Firstly, Paul does not say Christians should not grieve. The pain of separation is real; however, believers grieve differently because our sorrow is accompanied by hope.
Our hope is founded upon the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, because Jesus died and rose again, so shall believers. Death is not the end of the story, as it is the doorway into the presence of the Lord and the promise of future resurrection.
Paul then points to the glorious return of Christ. He declares that when the Lord descends from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God, “the dead in Christ will rise first.”
Every believer who has died trusting in Christ will be raised in victory. Their bodies will be transformed, and they will share in the eternal glory of God’s kingdom.
This promise brings tremendous comfort to those who mourn. Loved ones who have died in Christ are not lost forever, as there will be a joyful reunion when Jesus returns. The grave does not have the final word; Christ does. His resurrection guarantees the resurrection of all who belong to Him.
The return of Jesus is not merely a future event to study; it is a promise that sustains us in the present. As we await His coming, may we remain faithful, encourage one another, and find comfort in the assurance that those who have died in Christ will one day rise again.
