Have you ever walked a road of confusion, disappointment, or doubt? Have you ever felt uncertain of where God is or what He’s doing? That’s where we find two disciples on the road to Emmaus. It’s Resurrection Sunday, but they don’t know it yet, as all they feel is loss. Let’s face it, all their hopes had been nailed to a cross and buried in a tomb.

As they walk, Jesus Himself joins them, but they don’t recognize Him. It’s not that He’s hiding but rather, their hearts and eyes are not yet ready to see. The resurrected Christ walks alongside them, listens to their confusion, and then begins to open the Scriptures to them, starting with Moses and all the Prophets. He shows them how all of it points to Himself. When they later reflect on their encounter, they say, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

I have found over the years; the Holy Spirit doesn’t always appear in obvious ways. Sometimes He walks the dusty road with us quietly, patiently, faithfully. He meets us in our grief and disillusionment and slowly opens our hearts and minds to the truth of God’s Word. The Spirit doesn’t rush. He leads us gently into deeper understanding.

When Jesus breaks bread with them, their eyes are opened, and they recognize Him. But as soon as they do, He vanishes. Why? Because their physical sight was never meant to be the foundation of their faith, it should be their spiritual eyes.

When the Spirit leads, He moves us from despair to joy, from confusion to clarity, from walking away to running back and this is exactly what these two do. They return immediately to Jerusalem to share what they’ve seen.

In a world filled with noise, uncertainty, and spiritual fatigue, we need to tune into the Spirit’s leading. He often speaks through Scripture, quiet conviction, and being in God’s presence like worship. He walks with us on ordinary roads and opens our eyes in moments we least expect.

Let the following be an encouragement to you all: You may feel like you’re walking away from promise or purpose, but the Spirit may be drawing you toward revelation and renewal. Keep walking, keep listening, and stay open, because when the Spirit leads, even the most broken roads can become the path to divine encounter.
