In this week’s passage, Paul encourages believers to look beyond themselves and live in a way that strengthens others. “Each of us should please our neighbours for their good, to build them up.” In a world that often promotes the opposite, Paul reminds us that the Christian way of life should look different. Meaning our words, actions, and attitudes should help others grow, feel valued and direct us to the love of Christ and this is why Paul points to Jesus as our example.

Jesus did not live to please Himself but willingly gave His life for the good of others. His sacrifice demonstrates the depth of God’s love and shows us the pattern for our own lives. When we choose patience, kindness, and understanding, we reflect the character of Jesus to those around us.

Hospitality is one of the practical ways we can express this. Hospitality is more than inviting someone into our homes, making someone a cup of coffee, instead it’s welcoming people into our lives. It is making space for others, showing interest in their stories, and creating an environment where they feel accepted and cared for. A warm greeting at church, a shared meal, a listening ear, or a simple act of kindness can become powerful expressions of God’s grace.

Paul also reminds believers that unity glorifies God. When people from different backgrounds, experiences, and personalities come together with one heart and voice, it becomes a powerful witness. Our love for one another shows the world the transforming power of Jesus. However, this is not as easy as it sounds. As we often put our needs before unity, creating disunity. God does not bless this, but Satan loves this. If we are not growing, then ask God what is at the heart of the problem.

So, let’s “accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” Jesus welcomed us with grace, forgiveness, and compassion. If we are Christ like (Christians), then we should extend that same welcoming attitude to others.  To be a blessing to our community we should build a community of believers marked by love, encouragement and hospitality.

May God help us to be people who intentionally build others up, show hospitality and have a heart after God.
