The Holy Spirit helps us to have faith in Jesus and praise God for that, but don’t let that privilege go to your head. Paul warns us in Galatians about how we should be very careful regarding the liberty we have as believers.
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.” Galatians 5:13-15, ESV.
These verses remind us to follow the Word and to live humbly. It would be easy to think our confidence in Jesus allows us to be careless about our Christian life. The following paraphrase gives us an even clearer challenge on how we should live.
“It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows. For everything we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself. That’s an act of true freedom. If you bite and ravage each other, watch out—in no time at all you will be annihilating each other, and where will your precious freedom be then?” Galatians 5:13-15, The Message.
I think the example from Philippians 2 is worth reading. Here are just a few verses from that amazing chapter.
Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Philippians 2:6-8, NLT.
Jesus is your best example on how you should live. Set your goals in life with His attitude in mind. Care for those around you, it is actually Biblical to love those even when they don’t seem to care for you.
