When I was a child I remember singing a song called, “Father Abraham”. It had many verses and required lots of energy. This is the last verse,
“Father Abraham had many sons
Many sons had Father Abraham
I am one of them and so are you
So let’s just praise the Lord
Right arm, left arm, right foot, left foot
Chin up, turn around, sit down.”
The reality is that Abraham did have many sons but there was a time when he and Sarah had no children and they were very senior in years and had begun to doubt God’s promise to them but then Isaac came along and they eventually had countless children.
And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” So he called his name Israel. And God said to him, “I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body. The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give the land to your offspring after you.” Genesis 35:10-12, ESV.
It is a privilege to be included in this family. We should never take our adoption into God’s family for granted. It is good news. We should indeed, “Praise the Lord” as the song says.
