Part of the play for last Saturday night at our Carols featured an element of surprise that many people experienced around the birth of Jesus including Mary. This event is no surprise to God the Father who had this planned to bring salvation to mankind.
“Even though Mary was young she was a deep thinker and she wondered about her child who rather surprisingly caused so much interest amongst many people.
There were some untidy but friendly shepherds who were out in the fields caring for their animals who were very surprised by some angels and a lot of lovely singing which was far from their average night. They were told where they could visit the special baby.
They would have been very surprised to see Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus in a stable, such very humble circumstances. So they all crowded around the manger in the stable with a few animals but there was something very special happening. They were worshipping Jesus who is the King of Kings. Word got around about what happened in Bethlehem that night and all who heard about it were very surprised.
A long time after this some wise men who had been following a star found their way to see Jesus. Life certainly took an interesting turn for this family as these educated men brought gifts, each one with lasting and profound importance. But the final thing they said really did surprise Joseph and Mary and it was that they were to travel to Egypt and become refugees until it was time for them to return to Nazareth.
However, nothing would surprise Mary more than what the world has come to know as the first Christmas. Jesus came as a baby, born to a virgin, grew up as an ordinary child and became a man who later surprised everyone with all that He did and said. But He did not come just to help a few people, His main mission was to give His life so that we could also find life.”
