In one of His most intimate conversations with the disciples, Jesus offers a promise that still brings comfort to us today: “we are not alone.”

As Jesus prepared His followers for His departure, He reassures them with these words: “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, the Spirit of truth.” (John 14:16–17)

The word Helper, also translated as Advocate or Comforter, is the Holy Spirit—God’s own presence sent to dwell with and within believers. The world cannot understand this Spirit, Jesus says, because it does not know Him. But for those who follow Christ, the Holy Spirit becomes a constant companion, teacher, and guide.

Jesus connects love and obedience at the very beginning of this passage:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (v.15)
True love for Jesus is not just spoken, it’s demonstrated and lived. And as we seek to follow His words, He empowers us through the Spirit to do just that.

Jesus knew His disciples would face fear and uncertainty and are no orphans when it comes to that. So He offers something the world cannot: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (v.27)

This is not a fragile or fleeting peace. It is deep, abiding, Spirit-filled peace, which is rooted in the assurance that we are never abandoned us. The Holy Spirit is with us to teach us, remind us of Jesus’ words, and strengthen us when we feel weak.

John 14 reminds us that we don’t walk through life’s trials on our own. Whether you’re facing a difficult season or simply trying to live more faithfully, take heart: the Helper is with you.

So, this week can I ask you each day to ask yourself the following questions:

Am I seeking the Spirit’s guidance in my daily life?
Am I responding to Jesus’ love with obedience?
Am I resting in His peace, even when things maybe chaotic around me?

Let’s lean into the promise Jesus gave: “I will not leave you as orphans.” (v.18)

You are seen. You are loved. And by the grace of God, you are not alone.
