As we continue to look at Jesus and His disciples in John 6, we see the aftermath of Jesus’ teaching about being the “bread of life.” After hearing Him say that His followers must eat His flesh and drink His blood to have eternal life, many disciples are troubled. They say, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” Jesus acknowledges their discomfort but doesn’t soften His message. Instead, He goes on to emphasizes the need for faith. “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you, they are full of the Spirit and life.”

This passage highlights a critical moment in Jesus’ ministry. At this point, many of His followers struggled to grasp the spiritual depth of His words and as a result turned away from Him. They were more interested in physical signs and miracles
than the spiritual transformation He offered. Jesus then turns to the Twelve and asks, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Peter responds with faith, saying, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

This moment shows the challenge of following Jesus, especially when His teachings are difficult to understand or embrace. It also highlights the importance of faith in who Jesus is, not just what He does. Peter’s declaration reminds us that even when we face doubts or confusion, we must trust in Jesus as the source of eternal life.

As we reflect on this passage, it invites us to ask: When faced with difficult truths or challenges in our faith, will we choose to walk away, or will we, like Peter, hold fast to Jesus, trusting that He alone offers eternal life?
