Jesus delivered the seed parables (Mk: 4:1-34) from a boat on the sea to crowds seated on dry land. These parables are meant to assure us that God works to bring about His kingdom in small ways, even in threatening circumstances. The sea represents the power of those threatening circumstances and chaos, testing our faith. While some may view the sea as merely scenic, those who have experienced hurricanes or tsunamis may perceive it differently.
In the Bible, the sea often symbolizes chaos and the demonic. For instance, Moses leads the people from bondage to liberation through the sea, which then swallows their enemies. This symbolism underlines why Jesus asserts His authority over all creation.
Each of us strives to live by the message of the seed parables amid a chaotic life, not just for ourselves but for those we hope to positively influence, such as children, friends, or family. We are all surrounded by chaos, and all we need is faith the size of a mustard seed to withstand the storm. By having just, a little bit of faith in the One who holds all authority and power, we can find strength.
In Mark 4:35-41, Jesus asks His disciples, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” The disciples, despite witnessing His miracles, do not have faith even the size of a mustard seed. While we may not be able to control all of creation, we can take heart knowing who does or do we still ask, “Who then
is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
