In a world that often values comfort and convenience, Jesus remind us of the true cost of being a discipleship resulting in us having to reflect on what it really means to follow Christ and challenges us to a deeper, more radical commitment.

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)

Jesus’ call to deny ourselves and take up our cross daily is more than just giving up material things, it’s about choosing God’s will over our own and surrendering our lives fully to Him. The cross, a symbol of suffering and sacrifice and it encourages us to die to our old ways and follow Him wholeheartedly.

Verses 24 and 25 present us with a paradox: “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” The world tells us to seek personal gain, but Jesus teaches that true life is found when we surrender to Him. Pursuits like wealth or status can be momentarily gratifying, but self-sacrifice for the gospel leads to a more fulfilling life.

In verses 26 and 27, Jesus reminds us of the eternal significance of our choices: “For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed.” Our faith is not just for this life, it also impacts the next. Following Christ may cost us now, but it secures eternal glory.

It’s a call to radical discipleship, a life that places Christ at the centre. As we embrace this invitation, let’s ask: How can we live out this call to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus fully?
