One of the things that has been a benefit to our nation is that going through critical periods can have a positive effect for us. We can see people gathering together and supporting one another through tough times. We read about that in WW1, then in the 1930s during the depression and then again in WW2 and even in recent years when we have looked out for our neighbours through Covid. We are made to be in relationship with each other and with God our creator. Peter writes…
“Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.” 1 Peter 3:8-9, ESV.
God is a God of grace and forgiveness. These words from 1 Peter, were written by the Apostle Peter, who, at times with his impulsive character, did things like cutting off the ear of the High Priest’s servant. Something that Jesus saw as aggressive and uncalled for and Jesus immediately healed that servant. Even in the midst of suffering, we are to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, trusting that he has everything under His control. So much of our world wants to repay evil for evil but Jesus wants us to turn the other cheek and to remember that God will judge those who have caused us harm. In all that we do keep unity in mind, it’s a powerful witness.
