The seven words uttered by Jesus on the cross:
The first word, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing,” demonstrates Christ’s willingness to extend forgiveness to his persecutors, even as they nail him to the cross.

The second word, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise,” emphasizes Christ’s ability to forgive sins and offer salvation to all who believe in him.

The third word, “Woman, here is your son,” shows Christ’s concern for his mother, even as he suffers.  He asks John to care for her as his own mother.

The fourth word, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” expresses Christ’s deep anguish and sense of abandonment as he experiences the weight of humanity’s sin.

The fifth word, “I am thirsty,” reveals Christ’s human vulnerability and physical suffering.

The sixth word, “It is finished,” proclaims Christ’s triumphant completion of his mission on earth, including the ultimate sacrifice for humanity’s sins.

The final word, “Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit,” shows Christ’s submission to God’s will and his trust in the Father’s plan for his life and death.
