I recall being at an AFL game in Adelaide in the 90’s and the crowd were booing one of the Collingwood players every time he got the ball and that player was Nathan Buckley. He was a great player who was from SA originally. I thought that the continual booing was unnecessary and I wondered how his family must have felt if they were at the game to watch their relative playing so prominently for Collingwood, yet copping a ribbing from the Adelaide crowd. I know it is all in good fun for a while but there does come a time when the ribbing should cease.
There is a passage in 1 Corinthians that speaks about the divisions that occurred as people put their allegiance to a particular Christian leader instead of in “following Jesus”. It is all about Jesus not about the individual preacher or even the denomination. We are all part of God’s Kingdom work.
‘I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarrelling among you, my brothers. What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?’ 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, ESV
